    Big shapes

    One big teardrop

Lightly draw a long teardrop lying on its side: a big round head at one end, narrowing toward the tail.

  2. Step 2: Tail, flipper and a smile line
    02

Tail, flipper and a smile line

Curve the tail up and add two leaf-shaped flukes, a flipper, a long mouth line, the eye and a spout.

  3. Step 3: Ink the whale
    03

    Details

    Ink the whale

Ink the outline in one go, nose to flukes and back along the belly. Then the flipper, the smiling mouth and the belly line.

  4. Step 4: Eye, grooves and a spout
    04

    Details

    Eye, grooves and a spout

Add the eye with a shine, grooves that follow the curve of the belly, a splashy spout and a few waves.

  5. Step 5: Erase the pencil
    05

    Details

    Erase the pencil

When the ink is dry, gently erase all the pencil lines, including the ones inside the whale.

  6. Step 6: Dark on top, light below
    06

    Colour

    Dark on top, light below

Colour the back dark blue and the belly light blue. Colour the spout and waves light blue, leaving white sparkles.

  7. Step 7: Shadow underneath
    07

    Finishing touches

    Shadow underneath

The light comes from the top left, so add darker blue along the underside, under the flipper and down the tail.
