Privacy policy
This is a working draft written for review by counsel before launch. It describes how the product is built today; it is not yet legal advice or a final policy.
Who we are
Lapis is a drawing school for families. This policy explains what information Lapis holds, why, and the choices you have. Questions: hello@lapis.local.
Accounts belong to grown-ups
Accounts are made by adults, or by teenagers aged 13 to 17 drawing for themselves. We ask everyone their age with a neutral question; anyone under 13 is asked to get a parent or guardian to make the account.
What we collect
About the account holder
- Name, email address and password (stored as a secure hash), or a Google sign-in if you choose it.
- Time zone, email preferences and, if you set one, a hash of the family PIN.
- Your plan and payment history. Card details are handled by the payment provider and never reach Lapis.
About each learner profile
- A nickname, an age group (for example “8 to 12”), a picture chosen from our drawings, and settings such as read-aloud.
- Drawings saved to the sketchbook, including the recorded strokes used to replay them.
- Lesson progress: which steps and lessons were finished, when, how long they took and how they felt (“nailed it”, “tricky”).
We do not ask children for an email address, a password, a surname, a birthday, a photo of themselves or their location.
How the product is used
We record a small number of product events (for example “finished a lesson” or “opened the plans”) against the account, to understand what works. We do not use third-party analytics, advertising or tracking tools.
Parental consent
Before a child’s profile keeps any information, the account holder confirms they are the child’s parent or legal guardian and then verifies their own email address. That verification is their consent, and we send an email confirming it. If consent is not completed within 14 days, the child’s profile and everything in it is deleted.
How we use information
- To run Lapis: show lessons, save drawings, track progress and apply your plan.
- To send the emails you need (sign-in links, receipts, reminders) and the ones you choose (weekly progress, news).
- To keep Lapis safe and working, and to improve the lessons.
We never sell or rent information, never use it for advertising, and never show ads.
Sharing
Drawings are private to your household. A grown-up may create a share link for a single drawing; it shows the drawing and its title (never a name), is hidden from search engines, and stops working after 14 days or when you turn it off.
We use service providers for hosting, email delivery and payments, under contracts that limit their use of the information to providing those services.
Keeping and deleting
- Download everything we hold about your household, as one file, from the grown-ups area.
- Delete a profile, or the whole account, from the grown-ups area. Deletion is immediate.
- A child’s profile unused for 12 months is deleted after we email the account holder a warning.
Your rights
Depending on where you live you may have the right to access, correct, delete or move your information, and to object to some uses. Parents may review or delete their child’s information at any time. Write to us and we’ll respond within 30 days.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we’ll email the account holder before the change takes effect.
