How to draw Robot Buddy

What you need

  • Paper Plain printer paper is perfect.
  • Pencil (HB) For light first shapes you can erase.
  • Black fineliner 0.5 mm, or any black pen.
  • Eraser A soft white eraser.
  • Coloured pencils Any set; sharpen them first.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Flat rectangles first
    01

    Big shapes

    Flat rectangles first

Lightly draw a big rectangle for the body, a smaller one above it for the head, and little ones for the legs and feet.

  2. Step 2: Turn rectangles into boxes
    02

    Construction

    Turn rectangles into boxes

From three corners of each rectangle, draw short lines slanting up and to the right, all the same way. Join their ends.

  3. Step 3: Ink the boxes
    03

    Details

    Ink the boxes

Ink each box: the outside edge, then the three lines that meet at its front top corner. Skip lines hidden behind other boxes.

  4. Step 4: Face, antenna and arms
    04

    Details

    Face, antenna and arms

Add a screen with square pixel eyes and a pixel smile, an antenna with a ball, bendy tube arms with claws, and bolts.

  5. Step 5: Erase the pencil
    05

    Details

    Erase the pencil

Wait a minute for the ink to dry, then gently erase all the pencil lines, the hidden slants too.

  6. Step 6: Grey, blue and gold
    06

    Colour

    Grey, blue and gold

Colour the boxes grey, lightest on top. Make the arms, neck, feet and chest panel blue, the screen pale blue and the details gold.

  7. Step 7: Dark sides, solid robot
    07

    Finishing touches

    Dark sides, solid robot

Light comes from the top left, so shade every right side face darker. Add a shadow under the head and on the floor.
